It is twenty-five years since John Rebus appeared on the scene, and five years since he retired. But 2012 sees his return in STANDING IN ANOTHER MAN'S GRAVE. Not only is Rebus as stubborn and anarchic as ever, but he finds himself in trouble with Rankin's latest creation, Malcolm Fox of Edinburgh's internal affairs unit. Added to which, Rebus may be about to derail the career of his ex-colleague Siobhan Clarke, while himself being permanently derailed by mob boss and old adversary Big Ger Cafferty. But all Rebus wants to do is discover the truth about a series of seemingly unconnected disappearances stretching back to the millennium. The problem being, no one else wants to go there - and that includes Rebus's fellow officers. Not that any of that is going to stop Rebus. Not even when his own life and the careers of those around him are on the line.… (mere)

Enjoyed it. Rebus is a lot cleverer than me so I missed the key points but still enjoyed it. Tailed off a bit towards the end as it needed a lot of wrapping up. ( )

It’s taken me awhile to get back to reading the John Rebus series by Ian Rankin but it was well worth the wait. In book 17, Rebus retired and that was seemingly the end of the series. The author went on to write about another Edinburgh policeman, but happily Rebus has been brought out of retirement and in book 18, Standing in Another Man’s Grave, he is to be found working cold cases as a civilian volunteer.

John Rebus hasn’t changed, he is still as stubborn and set in his ways as ever. He does things his way, often the old-fashioned way, and for him, the ends have always justified the means. When a cold case about a missing young woman suddenly sparks into life as it appears that there could be evidence that this disappearance is just one in a number of young women who have vanished in the last fifteen years, Rebus is back in to the centre of the investigation. Being Rebus, he walks a fine line between the world of law and the world of crime, and little does he know he is being watched closely by Malcolm Fox of the Complaints Department.

Overall Standing in Another Man’s Grave is another excellent entry into this series. Many familiar characters make an appearance here so we are treated to Rebus’ entertaining relationships with the likes of his ex-partner, Siobhan Clarke and his old nemesis, “Big Ger” Cafferty but the cherry on top is the fact that Rebus is back and the author has set things in motion for the continued return of this detective. It was so good to revisit Rebus again although initially I was saddened a bit to see a favorite character age. It didn't take long to once again appreciate his methods and have fun solving a series of disappearances. ( )

Rebus and Rankin both on fine form...............what more could you want from a police procedural? ( )

I've been reading an advance copy of The End of Big #endofbig and it describes the very problem our favorite detective is up against - the old way of doing business is disintegrating and it's the nimble - John Rebus - who can see it and turn the tool to human ends who will shape the world. Radical Connectivity, Nicco Mele calls it, and Ian Rankin recognizes it. Twitter speed almost brings John down and instead he uses it so that human connection and justice win the day. This should be a major focus of conversation right now: when we use technology, how does it use us? And what are we going to do about it? ( )
