Great to spark storytelling and to discuss seasons and hibernating. ( )

Bear has a story to tell - he just needs an audience. But by the time he's found one, he's forgotten his story ("winter is a very long time for a bear to remember")...so his audience suggests one. And it just so happens that it's this one - the one we've just read. The first line and last line are the same: "It was almost winter and Bear was getting sleepy." Elegant. ( )

This cute book is about a bear who wants to tell a story to all his friends before winter comes; but each friend has something to do before winter starts. Before Bear knows it he is unable to tell his story to any of his friends and he takes a long sleep during the winter. Eventually all of his friends come back and they decide it's a perfect time to hear Bear's story, problem is....Bear can't remember what it's about. His friends help him remember and he finally tells his story.

I like this book for a few reasons. First, the art of the book is beautiful! I saw that the author was a Caldecott award winner and I am not surprised. The sketches are so soft and whimsical and pair very nicely with the clean print. This way the pictures mirror the text meaning but without distracting us from the story.
The second reason I like this book is because of the friendship the bear has with the other animals in the woods. He goes to tell them a great story but they are too busy to listen. He doesn't get upset. It is so endearing to see how bear helps out each of his friends with there preparation of winter. He even tests the wind for his friend duck. What is even better is that he doesn't even wait to ask them if they need help or says anything himself- he just does it so simply because they are his friends.
The message of this book is the giving relationship of friendship- bear wants to share something with his friends but they don't have time. Instead of getting upset or insisting they listen, he helps them. At the end of the story, he forgets what he wants to tell them but they now help him try to jog his memory. It brings the story full circle which makes for a satisfying ending.
This book is fantastic fiction because the animals have human characteristics. ( )

The bear wants to tell his friends a story but they are busy so he keeps waiting until he can tell. When he can tell them this though he forgot it and they help him come up with a story to tell.
