Brin and Bent are poolkeepers at The House for the Grossly Infirm. Their days are spent abusing the House residents with bleach and chlorine, spying on them through holes they have drilled in the walls. They do not know that someone else comes to the pool at night: Minno Marylebone, a child like no other. Pure and beautiful, every night the child enters the water and becomes celestial, laughing and riding the currents as the pool turns into a sea. Then one night Brin and Bent find the wax that has spilled from Minno's candle and decide to lie in wait... With this dark yet achingly beautiful tale, Ravi Thornton takes British graphic novels to a new level. The combination of her deft and masterful writing with the stunning artwork of Andy Hixon creates and an extraordinarily powerful and disturbing experience.… (mere)

The Tale of Brin and Bent and Minno Marylebone af Ravi Thornton

    Lucia af Andy Hixon (bluepiano)
bluepiano: The illustrator of Brin & Bent wrote and illustrated Lucia. The story is bleak and the images are of the same standard and as disturbing as those in this book and Hixon's writing isn't the cringefest that Thornton's is.
  2. 00
The Wizard of Oz af Graham Rawle (bluepiano)
bluepiano: Hixon in Brin & Brent and Rawle in Wizard of Oz have both redeemed mediocre texts with illustrations that though visually unlike are similar in their evocation of the dreamlike and disturbing.

Mmmm. The story was just okay -- seemed a little pointedly therapeutic.

The pictures were very good, though. A reviewer had compared Andy Hixon's work on this project favorably to Dave McKean, and I'd agree. The pictures were definitely the better part of the book. ( )
