For relaxation, Terry Adams races motocross. For a living, he has been a building contractor and supervisor of the town of La Honda's maintenance department. For love, he bought and restored Ken Kesey's log cabin (of Electric Kool-aid Acid fame) and lives there. In the deep past, he was an Air Force officer at SAC headquarters in charge of delivering the target codes for America's nuclear missiles — he was, he says, "the postmaster of the apocalypse." Then he became a pacifist and was quickly drummed out of the Air Force, upon which his father wrote him out of his will and left all his money to the US military. As you might expect, Terry Adams has an interesting take on life.

Jazz

Jazz is a man starting over and over
on a problem he has leisure to solve,
watched by people who solved their own
too soon.

Jazz is the man snagging your eye,
wondering if there's anything he likes
in the purse in the lap of your lover.
Jazz is the man begging for your soul

who paid his own in advance at the door.
Jazz is the man you looked at earlier,
who you catch looking at you now,
the white in his eyes singing intelligence

and poison. Jazz is the man who makes you think
your face has regained the chiseled beauty
you lost in the war with your television.
Jazz is the man playing to the fronts

of people's backs. He's always putting his hand
where there's never been a hand before.

Terry is the man writing cool poetry with a warm heart. ( )
