There were many reasons I did not like this book, but here are 2. First, the book was written in first person. The book contained pages about a young child explaining what he enjoyed and how he was showing the act of tolerance towards others because they were all unique. The reason I had a problem with this was the part where the readers reading this book may have a problem connecting with the little boy. Not everyone is like him yet the author wrote the book as if every “typical” American child would have the same thoughts and actions. For example, “I speak English and my classmate speaks Spanish. But we learn math together.”
Another reason I did not like this book was because of the organization. It seemed very scattered and it was not engaging for me at all. I could not connect to any part of this book and I don’t think all of the examples were connected with tolerance. The act of tolerance coincides with having to “deal” with something so to speak. I don’t think that word choice is appropriate for an age group like this. For example, “My classmate and I do not look the same. But we smile and laugh together.” I think that this concept is great, but I don’t think it is explained in the right way. This book should be able acceptance or equality or how everyone is unique. But, the story is focused on a middle class white child and the meaning of tolerance does not seem to fit correctly with this book.
The big idea that the author tried to portray was the fact that everyone is different and accepting, but that was not evident to me. ( )
