City of Darkness takes place in 1888 London, where Jack the Ripper roams the streets with impunity and Scotland Yard seems helpless to stop him. The science of forensics is in its infancy but a few detectives – Trevor Welles among them – recognize that they are dealing with a different sort of killer, a “modern criminal” who chooses his victims at random. If Jack is to be caught, he won’t be caught with Scotland Yard’s normal methods of deduction for there is no logic to this madness. The question is no longer “Why was the victim killed?” but rather “How was the victim killed?” For the first time in the history of detection, science is trumping deductive reasoning. When a twist of fate puts Trevor in charge of the case, he hastily assembles Scotland Yard’s first forensics team: Davy Mabrey, the first bobby on the scene of the grisliest of the murders, whose working class common sense proves an invaluable asset, Rayley Abrams, a cautious intellectual whose future at the Yard is marginalized due to his Jewish heritage, Tom Bainbridge, a medical student with aristocratic connections and a secret drinking problem, and Emma Kelly, sister of the Ripper’s last victim who has a troubled past and a gift for linguistics. The team finds an unlikely ally in the form of Queen Victoria herself, who takes an unusual level of interest in the Ripper case and secretly funds the unit. But will they stop Jack in time to spare Leanna Bainbridge, the young heiress with whom Trevor has fallen madly and improbably in love?… (mere)

It is the time of Jack the Ripper, a different kind of killer. Trevor Welles becomes the lead detective as he tries to use forensics to capture Jack.
The story brings together various characters to form a team of specialists to hunt the killers. ( )

First in a series bringing together the cast for a series 'City of Mystery'. This first story has Trevor Wells a detective with Scotland Yard pitting wits with Jack the Ripper. Characters are good, storyline moves quickly and the ending surprised me. Can't wait to read more. ( )

This is the first in a series of mysteries featuring prominent European cities from the Victorian era. This first one is set in London. It features many of the staples you would expect in a Victorian era mystery, crime, family scandal, romance and Jack the Ripper. It evokes the atmosphere that I expect from a book of this location and time period. I'm very susceptible to atmosphere so I was pleased with that.

Jack the Ripper is causing panic in London and the police are doing everything they can think of to track him down. The fledgling science of forensics is just barely being used and many think it is a lot of baloney. Seeing the beginnings of scientific investigation was very interesting. The officers involved were fighting very hard to make it acceptable and reliable. Even though this is fiction, this is a probably a fairly realistic look at how forensics was treated in the beginning of the science.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a very character-driven story and the personalities of the people are developed throughout the book. The action is driven by the characters' reaction to events rather than plot-driven and I find that very satisfying. I'm glad this is a series so that I can revisit these people again. ( )

Just finished [City of Darkness (City of Mystery)] by [[Kim Wright]]. 4 stars. The first of a series, this one is a Jack the Ripper mystery in London, and it frequently shows up free for Kindle on Amazon. It is really quite good. The characters are very well-developed, and I look forward to encountering them in subsequent volumes. The story line is tight, no hanging threads or last-minute out-of-the-blue surprises. I must admit to occasional feelings of being creeped-out, but that's to be expected from a good historical fiction/mystery during night shift. ( )

Young heiress goes to live with her aunt and brother who is studying to be a doctor in Mayfair during the time of the Jack the Ripper murders. Her aunt is friendly with the police detective and a doctor who both work in the Whitechapel area of London and keep them informed of the latest happenings. When the sister of the maid of the aunt's is murdered by Jack and a letter comes indicating there was a child, Leanna and the maid take off to meet the sender of the ransom note in Whitechapel. Very exciting walk through a dangerous section of town and rescue by all the important characters. ( )
