But within minutes of his arrival, Ethan is involved in a violent accident. He comes to in a hospital, with no ID, no cell phone, and no briefcase. The medical staff seems friendly enough, but something feels ... off. As the days pass, Ethan's investigation into the disappearance of his colleagues turns up more questions than answers. Why can't he get any phone calls through to his wife and son in the outside world? Why doesn't anyone believe he is who he says he is? And what is the purpose of the electrified fences surrounding the town? Are they meant to keep the residents in? Or something else out? Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the world he thought he knew, from the man he thought he was, until he must face a horrifying fact - he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive" -- Author's website.… (mere)

Ethan Burke is a secret service agent who has arrived in Wayward Pines, Idaho in search of two of his colleagues that have gone missing. He is involved in an accident with a truck upon reaching the town. He awakens in a hospital with no phone, no ID, nothing of his personal possessions. There are times when he is not really sure of who he is.
He leaves the hospital in search of law enforcement to acquire his personal items, but the sheriff tells him that he does not have those objects. When he uses a land phone to call his wife and son, he can not get through.
Ethan explores Wayward Pines and there are many instances of things not being normal.

This was a good story, just a little bit too much physical description of violence and body trauma for my taste. ( )

This was a fun one. Not stunning writing, but the plot was full of enough mysteries to keep any reader going.

It's hard to mention anything of note in this novel without giving something away, so instead, I'll just say, I enjoyed it, though not a massive fan of the reveal at the end, but interested to see where it goes next. ( )

I bought this after enjoying the TV show but I've read a few Blake Crouch books since then and I'm going to let it go. I know the story well... actually the TV show was cancelled... ugh... off to research...

I'm back, thank-you reviewers! I see that "the first season covers all three books." Okay, good, I only have book 1 of a trilogy and I know the story from the show and if I want to think about it, I can pull up/recall the TV version which had great actors and M. Night Shyamalan directing.

This book.
It's written.
In fragments.

The writing style really got on my nerves. While it was kind of a page turner, the final reveal was really far-fetched and disappointing, which left me feeling ambivalent about the whole thing. I also felt the supporting characters needed to be fleshed out. Overall - meh. ( )

I don't know what's up with me, because so many of the books I've read recently have been hard to rate, and this one was no different.

I won't go into plot summaries, because millions of people have already done that, plus spoilers. So I'll just say that as I was reading the novel, I was haunted by the perception that it was similar to something else I had read. Or seen. Or something. The story felt derivative. Twin Peaks. Stepford Wives. The Village. The Bourne et al. The amnesiac hero trying to discover his past has been done. The theme of the small town which is perfect on the outside, not so perfect underneath, has been done. And while it may be a timeless idea, nothing in the first two thirds of the novel made me believe that Pines was going to add anything substantive to the mix.

In addition, I didn't connect with the main character, Ethan. I just didn't. He was a little too bad-ass, too single-mindedly devoted to his wife and son, too one-dimensional. And most of the pages were full of running, fighting, chasing and being chased by mobs of angry villagers with pitchforks. I got tired of it and kept putting the book down.

So what did I like about it, you ask? Well, I liked the ending, the big reveal. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I enjoyed that sense of surprise and exploring the Big Idea behind the curtain. I just wish the lead up had been more tense and mysterious and less chasey. And I wish the science had been a little more sciency. ( )
