DNF'd: Characterization is solid, but world-building is too light for my taste. ( ) Reread for the nth time. The plot is a glorious tangled mess and it all comes together beautifully. If you are into mistaken identity and comedies of errors, this is gold. Also a good precursor to Memory because we start to see how Miles' conflicting identities are affecting him. The cover is absurd and kitschy, as are most of the covers for this series, and now I'm thinking about how I would design it. The type of bipolar I have and the type of bipolar Miles has are mostly very different (for one thing I'm type II) but: Miles manic on fast-penta compulsively reciting all the Shakespeare he can remember is exactly how I behave when I'm on an upswing. Accordingly I think this is an incredible book. generally I can read these without going "ok but empire is very bad though" the whole time but the plot of this one -- the literal putting-down of a rebellion -- made that a lot harder. Like man I dunno. I would hate it if the Barrayaran empire were to conquer my people. I would probably want to fight for our freedom! And all the business about "why can the older generation not understand that the young people LIKE assimilating to the conquering culture" Ok.

Lead by Admiral Naismith (a.k.a. Lord Miles Vorkosigan), the Dendarii Mercenaries have pulled off the daring interspace rescue of an entire Cetagandan POW camp. But they have made some deadly enemies. Having finally outrun the infuriated Cetagandans, the Dendarii arrive on Earth for battle, shuttle repair, and a well deserved rest. But Miles realizes he's in trouble again. First the Mercenaries' payroll doesn't arrive on time, and then someone tries to murder him. Now Miles must juggle both his identities at once to unravel the complicated plot against him -- and to reveal an unexpected ally. Just who is trying to assassinate which of his personas, and why?
