1976 Jean Barois, by Roger Martin du Gard translated by Stuart Gilbert (read 30 Jan 1986) I was so impressed by the author's magisterial books on the Thibaults that I long wanted to read this early book of his. It tells of a Frenchman who loses his Faith in his youth but comes back to God at his death. It was rather pleasant to read of one who is concerned about his Faith--nowadays the people against religion just ignore it. Jean is an ass, who abandons his wife and child because his wife is a good Catholic. He comes to know his daughter, Marie, when she is 18. She then enters a convent in Belgium. I enjoyed the book--Martin du Gard is an effective writer, though one wishes he were pro- rather than anti-Catholic. A large section of this book tells of the Dreyfus affair, but that part wasn't as interesting as the story of Barois' struggle against his Faith. ( )
