diverse picture book in English with Spanish vocabulary (firefighters, everyday heroes; for ages 2.5 and up)
* Prominently features diverse characters: vibrant illustrations by Dan Santat depict two caucasian men, a medium-dark (hispanic?) man, a black man and an asian (or latina?) woman. Most of them aren't particularly brawny as I'd expect a firefighter to be, but it does portray the idea that people of any background can perform this job. The crowd of people gathered to watch them work are mostly lighter-skinned, but probably no one's really going to pay attention to them in this story anyway.
* Would work in storytime for older toddlers (because of all the action, though you may want to skip some of the pages/text to make it shorter if their attention wanes) and definitely for preschoolers. The text is really nicely done--rhymey, fast paced, and sprinkled with Spanish words, for which there is a glossary in the back. ( )

This children's picture book, with vibrantly detailed illustrations details the job of firefighters using English and Spanish vocabulary. For a student learning the English language or Spanish language, this is an easy read with context clues to easily decode unknown words. ( )

As a kid I really thought that firefighters were as close to superheroes as anyone could be. Even though the firefighters in Tucson weren't putting out fires in skyscrapers I always felt like they were there to help the community. I liked the bilingual effect in this story as well, it would help kids learn some new Spanish words. ( )
