Mesmerizing read -- and a risky but very fulfilling use of multiple points of view, including three ghosts. ( )

Oliver really fleshed out the main characters. Enjoyable read. ( )

Rooms, by Lauren Oliver is a very different kind of novel. It is NOT your typical haunted house novel..! It's not scary, it's profound, and sweet. Slowly, the story unfolds, like a soft sigh in the air. An interesting tale, about 2 ghosts, and a family of four, all living together under one roof.
The lyrical prose would have been MUCH more powerful, if the point of view was not changed every single chapter though. I was left confused for most of the novel, even though every chapter had the person who's p.o.v. it was, was labeled. There is too much jumping back and forth in time for me to sit quietly and enjoy the storyline. I understand the wanting to live part; I totally understand the wanting to die part. But the information that was to be gleaned about everyone's stories was either too subtle for me to grasp, or too finely sprinkled throughout the chapters for me to collect. I felt lost, most of the time.
The chapters with the ghosts were at first very fascinating to me....and then the chapters got smaller, and the p.o.v kept changing back and forth, and it became difficult for me to get back into the rhythm of things. Still, the ending was very good, and all your questions are (more or less) answered.......I think. Still, I wouldn't mind reading another novel by this author at a later date. 3 - 1/2 stars. ( )

Alice and Sandra are destined to spend the rest of time intertwined into the very structure of the house where they once lived. Speaking through the creeks and groans of the house itself, they reminisce about the lives they once led, and what brought them to this dismal fate. When the Walker family arrive, a new ghost also appears, and the house is quickly becoming crowded. Rooms by Lauren Olivier takes a new twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring how everyone can be haunted by their memories, addictions, and relationships, living or dead. ( )

I don't know what to make of Rooms by Lauren Oliver. At times I loved it. I mean, it's a peculiar but unique concept that promises to stick in one's memory. At other times though, I had terrible déjà vu. Didn't J.K. Rowling do this too with The Casual Vacancy? You know, skip out on the young adult scene and transition to adult novels with some odd thriller thing that is forgettable? I think so. I also think that Oliver didn't have to pull a Miley Cyrus on herself by trying to make her writing seem more "mature" for the sake of it being seen as "literature". If you want to write a sex scene, go for it, but don't use stupid descriptions and don't cheapen your writing for the hell of it ...

If you don't know by now, I have a love/hate relationship going on with Oliver. I loved Panic, I hated the Delirium trilogy, and Rooms was supposed to be the scale tipper, but I was left feeling somewhat unsure. Rooms isn't bad, but it isn't particularly good either. In a nutshell, it's just another story about a haunted house with a screwed up family, and some ghosts trying to cross over. That's it. You learn about the family, the ghosts, and that's it. There's not a lot of character growth present and there are many plot holes, but again, it's not exactly bad because Oliver has figured out the formula to keep readers turning the pages.

That being said, seeing as it's October and I'm in the mood for ghost stories, I'll let this book slide and recommend it for your Halloween reads. There are many books out there that's better and worse than Rooms, but seeing as it's at least got some unique elements to it, I'm going to put it into the "Give-It-A-Try" category for thriller fans.
