In Alberta, Canada, an eminent paleontologist disappears from a dinosaur dig site, and at the Cambridge Forensic Center, Kay Scarpetta receives a grisly communication that gives her a dreadful reason to suspect this may become her next case. Then, with shocking speed, events begin to unfold. A body recovered from Boston Harbor reveals bizarre trace evidence hinting of a link to other unsolved cases that seem to have nothing in common. Who is behind all this? And whom can Scarpetta trust? Her lead investigator, Pete Marino, and FBI agent husband, Benton Wesley, are both unhappy with her because of personnel changes at the CFC, and her niece Lucy has become even more secretive than usual. Scarpetta fears she just may be on her own this time--against an enormously powerful and cunning enemy who seems impossible to defeat.--Publisher.… (mere)

Thank goodness someone was there to save Kay Scarpetta's life again! She has so many guardian angels that by now just about everyone of her close family/friends has saved her life at least once.

The plot of this book was very slow moving and while I will always say that Cornwell paints a perfect picture of everything happening in the book, the dialogue is getting old. Kay is constantly arguing with either Marino, Benton, or Lucy about personal issues that don't really further the plot. The first 300 pages introduced the issues/murders, but then after that was mainly irritating dialogue. Thankfully the last 50-100 pages was able to wrap everything up very nicely and tidily. Once again the killer was someone she knew(or thought she knew) but is seemed more of an afterthought.

I'm starting to think that I shouldn't continue to read the Scarpetta series books anymore. I feel obligated to because I've made the journey with her throughout her entire career, but now it's becoming too much about the character's personal issues and less about solving a murder(s). This book was definitely better than a few of her recent ones that came out, but I'm starting to think Cornwell should stop before she gets too far ahead of herself. ( )

I enjoyed the book, and I was so glad to see the character of [redacted spoiler] appear, and hope that we shall see more of that character in other stories. There is a distinct shift in the behaviour of Lucy, which is positive, perhaps she is maturing. Benton and Kay seem to start the story, as they so often do, with troubles and concerns re their relationship. Marino continues to be his own man. ( )

another fun bit of bus reading, but no real substance - characters and plot too convoluted for me to really appreciate them and it. tied up OK at the end but took a while - not a page turner. ( )

Ok, that's more like it. Not as dark and gloomy as her last 2 books were. Pace picked up quite a bit and I flew thru this one like it was a Prey novel. Keep it up Patricia ( )
