This newedition has been extensively updated throughout. Major structuralchanges include new chapters on Functional Heads and Head Movementand on Relativized Minimality. Discussions of a number of topicsmissing from or not paid due attention in the first edition havebeen integrated or expanded, for example: the structure of smallclauses (in chaprer 2), chain formation (in chapter 6), andreconstruction, multiple movement, wh-absorption, FullInterpretation, and expletive replacement (in chapter 9). Thecopious exercises have been revised to increase potential forcreativty and flexibility of approach. New exericases highlightfurther controversial issues. Hits the important points of the theory, and I often see it referenced as a standard textbook.

Another textbook about the same syntactic framework is Andrew Radford's Transformational Grammar. For a long time at the University of Washington, Radford was the undergraduate textbook and Haegeman was the graduate one. Both are worth a look if you're either trying to teach yourself this variety of syntax or put together a syntax course. ( )
