The humour seems more heavy-handed than I remember from the other books in the series I have read, and the competition between Emerson and Amelia to be right about the series of deaths is unconvincing. We see that both have tendencies towards hyper focus on archaeology to the detriment of everything else, but at times they get almost frivolous and I found it off-putting. Either this pandemic has interfered with my sense of humour, or Peters’s writing improved by later in the series. ( )

This is the second Amelia Peabody adventure and is told in her own distinctive and eccentric voice. When the story begins, Amelia and her husband Emerson are stuck in England because neither wants to leave their young and precocious son Ramses bur are worried for his health if they take him to Egypt.

When Lady Baskerville comes to see them in England, they are persuaded to go to Egypt - leaving Ramses behind - to work on a tomb discovered by her late husband who died mysteriously. The newspapers are saying that he died of a mummy's curse which neither Peabody nor Emerson believes. However, something is wrong. There are other murders and attacks and the native workers are very reluctant to work on the tomb in case the curse might be real.

Peabody and Emerson compete with each other to be the first to discover what is really going on and find themselves in all sorts of danger as they investigate.

I love Amelia Peabody's eccentric viewpoint. The book is filled with quirky characters who all might have reasons for the troubles at the tomb. I especially liked the old woman who is certain that Emerson was her lover in a past life.

The narration was excellent. Susan O'Malley does a great job with the pacing and with making each character distinct. ( )

Summary: Amelia and Emerson have not been back to Egypt since the birth of Ramses. They don't plan to go until a damsel in distress begs Emerson to complete the dig her deceased husband began. However, the site is plagued with a curse making it nearly impossible for anyone to continue the work. Of course, the Emresons take on the project and Amelia decides to also solve the murders that accompany their task.
Review: Ramses and the descriptions of his antics had me laughing out loud. Although I has suspicions of the motive and the murderer, I was a bit surprised at the outcome. Cyrus was introduced and will surly appear in subsequent books. ( )

I enjoyed the amusing dialogue between the married Peabody and Emerson more than I did solving the mystery around the murder.
Also, Barbara Rosenblat is an exceptional narrator. ( )
