I liked the first in the series, but in this sequel it bothered me that Gidwitz was changing Hans Christian Andersen's stories to make them darker. I couldn't understand the point. ( )

Well written, clever and funny but too gory for me. The author forewarns the reader but I didn't take him seriously. ( )

Well written and clever, this book was too gory for me though the reader is forewarned by the author. There were also a couple plot threads left hanging and some character motivations were unclear. ( )

The author wrote this series in the trendy mode where he breaks the fourth wall to comment on the narrative as it unrolls.
Rather than just rewriting or updating the classic fairy tales, he massages a selection of themes and tales from different authors as "chapters" in a coherent narrative, along with some original material.
It's okay, but too gruesome for younger readers. ( )

The grossness quotient has gone up in Gidwitz’s companion to A Tale Dark and Grimm, his grisly reimagining of classic fairy tales. Translation: this second foray is even more enjoyable than the author’s acclaimed debut.
