"Differentiating Instruction With Menus for the Inclusive Classroom: Science" offers teachers who have multiple ability levels in one classroom everything they need to create a student-centered learning environment based on appropriate choice for everyone. The book provides numerous types of leveled menus that elementary-aged students can use to select exciting products to demonstrate learning. The attractive reproducible menus in the book address topics such as physical science, Earth science, and tools used by scientists. Menus with similar formats but geared towards varying ability levels allow teachers to differentiate easily. Using the creative and challenging choices found in Tic-Tac-Toe Menus, List Menus, 2-5-8 Menus, and Game Show Menus, students will look forward to sharing their newfound knowledge throughout the year. Also included are specific guidelines for products, rubrics for assessing student products, and teacher introduction pages for each menu.… (mere)

Summary:

The author presents a menu system which allows teachers to individualize instruction for a number of achievement levels within the same classroom. The activities are constructivist based, with learners participating and engaging in science lessons.

Personal Reaction:
This title offers a unique perspective on differentiated instruction. I enjoyed the hands-on nature of these activities and the feeling of centers for older elementary children. I believe that Vygotsky's theories of social learning reach many children that would otherwise fall between the cracks of more traditional approaches.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. This book would be a fantastic resource for creating and carrying out science centers.
2. The menu idea could easily be adapted to other subjects.

This is a great book to have on my classroom shelf! I am going into student teaching this fall and I have already gained a few ideas from this book. I like how it emphasized differentiating to gain an overall perspective of a student's learning.

This book is full of suggestions for applications within many different classroom environments. Often I find that books written with classroom activities do not take into account the many variables that exist within a classrooms. Ms. Westphal takes into account these variables. Things such different ability levels and time. Her menus are very flexible. The concepts in this book can be applied to any grade level and subject. I do not teach science but I used some of the frameworks presented in this book in my class room to much success. ( )

I thoroughly enjoyed this book because I can easily implement these menus into my classroom right away. I appreciate that there are pages that I can photocopy and use immediately without having to create anything on my own. It was a wonderful resource for science teachers that I will look forward to implementing in my science instruction next year! :) ( )

I absolutely loved this book Differentiating Instruction with Menus for the inclusive Classroom Science!! This is the first book of Laurie E. Westphal that I have read. The menus are a fabulous idea because it gives the students choices. I found myself the first day I received the book not wanting to put it down. I want to understand how these menus worked. The new CORE Curriculum is pushing for more authentic assessments and this book is full of ideas and choices. My major concern is time. I understand they have two weeks to work on the unit projects; however, I afraid some activities will need longer. The rubric are a great idea, I love that the students are assessing their own work. This book is great for any teacher wanting to enhance their students learning experiences. I’m excited about the book and hope to use it in my classroom. I will be looking for Laurie E. Westphal books in the future. ( )
