No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as "the beautiful mystery." But when the renowned choir director is murdered, the lock on the monastery's massive wooden door is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir of the Surete du Quebec. There they discover disquiet beneath the silence, discord in the apparent harmony. One of the brothers, in this life of prayer and contemplation, has been contemplating murder. As the peace of the monastery crumbles, Gamache is forced to confront some of his own demons, as well as those roaming the remote corridors. Before finding the killer, before restoring peace, the Chief must first consider the divine, the human, and the cracks in between.… (mere)

Gregorian chant; Beauvoir in bad shape

If like me you go into a book blind, i.e. reading no reviews, knowing only enough to want to read it, then The Beautiful Mystery will be a complete surprise. I am fully in the Louise Penny fan base although I have just completed #8. I am in awe of her writing, her storytelling and her character development over each new book. This one was a total turn from her usual. So as not to ruin it for those who want to read it, I have tagged these comments
It is a locked room mystery set in a remote monastery. The plot is encased in an exploration of the Gregorian chant and the ascent to the divine. Penny handles this topic in depth and with deftness. She combines the historical context with a current day sensibility to reveal the power of music. I am so glad I did not know any of this going in. My first impression was "not sure I'm going to like this. Then whoosh I was carried away on an incredible journey that included mystery across the centuries and current day murder. As always Penny advances the plotline of Gamache and Bouvoir along with a very dark appearance of Francoeur. The contrast of silence and beautiful music is a constant theme. Although the book has a religious base of course, it is more about meditation and the transcendence of music than any particular faith or lack thereof. Penny's description of the blending of voices was remarkable and made me yearn to hear it as she described...Google did not provide anything close.
Highly recommend. Although I can't imagine reading this series out of order, I believe Penny provides enough background to appreciate the back story and the mystery itself is independent. Now I have to wait 25 weeks if I want the next one from Libby. I am a faithful library patron so I will wait, but with great anticipation. Her books get better and better. ( )

This story line packs an emotional punch. The characters are so real that I've become kin to them. Each case is a stage for them to develop themselves and their attachment or disenfranchisement to each other. In this book a long lost group of monks, hidden away in the Quebec wilderness, have to reach out because one of them has been murdered. The killer has to be one of them. The chief inspector and inspector Beauvoir enter a monastery to find him. A monastery no other humans have seen. A monastery with a number of secrets. Gregorian chant, enemies, the push pull of ego all play parts. ( )

The “beautiful mystery” of Penny’s eighth Gamache mystery refers to Gregorian chant, plainsong, and its mysterious allure and spiritual appeal even to the lay listener. Playing off the international sensation surrounding the 1994 release of recordings of the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos, The Beautiful Mystery finds Gamache and his loyal lieutenant, Inspector Jean-Guy Beauvoir, being called to a monastery to investigate the murder of a monk.

But it’s not just any monastery, and it’s not just any monk.

The mysterious Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups monastery existed in isolation for hundreds of years, two dozen monks living in the remote Quebec wilderness, accessible only by plane or boat, with a plain wooden door locked to the world. They are the last vestiges of the Gilbertines, an order of monks devoted to plainsong, who vanished during the Inquisition.

Their seclusion came to an end, however, with the release of a recording of their chants, a recording which became a sensation around the world, drawing pilgrims and the press, all of whom met with the locked door at the gate. The door opens to Gamache and Beauvoir, however, as they come to investigate the murder of Brother Mathieu, the choirmaster.

The choir of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups became a sensation on the basis of a single recording, but that success has also created a fracture in the monastic community, “a civil war, fought with glances and small gestures,” which Gamache and Beauvoir discover early on in their investigation. That fracture makes everyone in the once close-knit community a suspect in the choirmaster’s murder.

The mystery – which is in itself compelling, and reminiscent, on the surface and unavoidably, of Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose – works as a catalyst for an ongoing series of inquiries into the nature of faith, loyalty and friendship, deepening familiar characters and developing relationships in a realistic, often painful fashion. It’s a stirring, thought- provoking read, less a matter of whodunit than a relentless questioning of why any of us do anything. The Beautiful Mystery satisfies as a mystery, and stands as a powerful literary novel in its own right, regardless of whether one has read the previous seven novels in the series.
