A totally serviceable story about unlikely friends, the carefree bird and the worrywart squirrel, trying to escape the clutches of an evil cat who wants to eat them. It's a nice, bright graphic novel that will be an easy sell to most fans of the genre. ( )

I was not surprised to learn that the author was an animator before he started writing books because reading this book was like watching a cartoon.
Everyone's facial expression was perfect, and the cat was hilarious. I now love Bird and Squirrel and must have more. ( )

This is a cute comic style graphic novel about a bird who does not have a care in the world, he loves to fly and is not worried about much of anything. He meets squirrel who seems to be afraid of everything! After Squirrel uses his entire winter stash of food to save Bird from the killer cat, Bird talks squirrel into an adventure South where he promises plenty of food and safety from the cold winter. They overcome many obstacles on the way and become best friends in the end. ( )

Dynamic panels, bright colours to match the storyline. The comedy is in the badinage between bird & squirrel, first irritation and then uncertain trust budding into friendship allowing Burks to leaven the plot. Much more characterisation in this first installment, the next two will rely upon readers knowing the personalities as they focus upon the plot and action by other characters.

We picked this off the shelf in the library, unseen & unacquainted with it. W read it himself a bit Saturday morning, really read it and not only looking at the panels. Then we read through that evening before bed, it was clear he knew more than just what the pictures revealed. R also read it herself, and looked forward to the others as much as we did. ( )
