Have you had a chance to read Gaelan Foley’s The Inferno Club series yet? If not, you’re really missing out on some great romance that’s filled with adventure, mystery and intrigue. Now this is the way to tell a romance with an element of adventure in it, and not the other way around.

This club is a cover for very special élite of men who belong to The Order of St. Michael and whose purpose is to protect the King and Country against The Promethean, the evil association of another élite group of men who want to rule the world and destroy England. They are Knights of the Order and have trained since childhood, as their fathers before them and as their children will after them, in protecting the Realm.

I’ve already read Max [My Wicked Marquess], Rohan [My Dangerous Duke], Jordan [My Irresistible Earl] and Drake’s story [My Ruthless Prince].

I really like this series, but the only drawback I see to it, is ... thanks for jumping to b2b to finish my review ...

Sebastian Walker, Viscount Beauchamp has a complicated life, on the surface he's a rake, racking up conquests, beneath that he works to safeguard the empire and western society against the Promethan Society. Mis Carissa Portland is a woman who likes information and when she sees a man give an orange seller a note for Sebastian she wonders if he's wandering into a trap. When she goes to warn him she gets caught up in his other life and is compromised. So a marriage follows and some miscommunication follows.

I liked it, though there were times when I wanted to lock the two of them up in a room and force them to talk to each other. Enjoyable read, liked the characters, the whole secret society thing is a bit over the top but entertaining overall. ( )

Very good book. Carissa and Beau have known each other for years. Beau is a notorious rake in public, but in private he is one of a group of operatives who protect the country. Carissa is a busybody - or "lady of information" - who tends to poke he nose where it doesn't belong. He's attracted to her but her personality and his line of work are not a good mix. Then she gets hurt trying to save him from harm and the resulting compromising situation forces them to marry. Beau wants to keep her safe and Carissa wants to help him save his friends. Neither of them expects the storm of emotions that connect them.

I liked Carissa even though sometimes I wanted to shake her. The main reason for her nosiness is to be aware of any gossip that might affect her after she made a regrettable mistake with a man. She doesn't understand her excessive interest in Beau, but that doesn't stop her from butting in when she things he's about to be attacked by a jealous husband. Instead she gets between him and a rogue agent and ends up getting shot. When Beau takes her to the Inferno Club headquarters to fix her up she manages to discover his secrets. Between that and being alone with him, they must marry to save their reputations. Beau and fellow club members are under attack from members of their own government and Carissa feels she can use her abilities to help find out the truth but Beau doesn't trust her enough to allow it. Not owning up to that past mistake to Beau has caused him to doubt her honesty. Carissa is a lot smarter than Beau realizes and his refusal just makes her more determined to help. However, she has a tendency to jump in without considering what the consequences of her actions could be. Add in her growing love for him and she is desperately afraid of losing him. After the deaths of her parents when she was young she spent years being shuffled from family member to family member, just wanting to be loved for herself. I loved seeing the way that Carissa's mind worked and how she was able to connect bits of information. I also loved seeing her determination to help Beau even as she feared losing him. The ending was great.

Beau is the Order member who has been left to deal with the government investigation at the same time he is trying to find out what happened to his two missing team members. For relief he goes out on the town looking for a liaison, instead finding himself in a duel of words with Carissa. He can't understand why his brain always seems to shut down around her as he can't help giving her a hard time. He's also made the mistake of kissing her a couple times which just adds to the problem. His fear for her when she gets shot trying to help him makes him realize that he may be in more trouble with her than he thought. The same lack of thinking around her enables her to discover his secret identity and he insists that they marry. He doesn't expect to be so pleased with the idea. I loved how those developing feelings of his show his romantic side (the wedding gifts were fantastic) and how great he was with her that night. When he discovers that she's been hiding a rather important secret from him it causes him to wonder if he really knows Carissa at all. He tries to encourage her to confide in him without telling her what he suspects and is hurt by her avoidance. He still can't deny his feelings and his need to protect her is just as strong. He doesn't seem to realize just how strong her need to help is as he keeps shutting her out of the investigation. I loved the ending as they finally learn to trust each other completely.

The conclusion of the investigation into the Order by the government and the results of the search for the bad guys was very well done. It kept me turning the pages as I tried to figure out what was going to happen next. It was pretty obvious that the government guy had an agenda but the scope of the whole thing was pretty incredible. I loved seeing the way that Beau and Carissa were central to solving the whole issue and what it meant for their relationship. I always enjoy catching up with previous characters and these were no exception. ( )

im giving this one a 2.5 because of the way the leads act. in the beginning 2/3 of the story Beau isn't a jackass, but in the last 1/3 he just keeps telling Carissa to "obey" and "behave herself." I kept expecting him to say 'siiiiiit. sit. staaaaay. stay. good girl.' I don't read these for historical accuracy, and it annoys me when the lead male (whom we're supposed to sigh over) treats the heroine like a dog. though she was no better. somewhere in the last 1/3 Carissa lost her spine and spent the last part of the book apologizing and trying to get her husband to listen to her by whining. she got annoying and he turned into an ass. not sure what happened, because they were quite interesting in the beginning. What happens when a devilishly good-looking spy masquerading as a womanizing rakehell of very little conscience and a "lady of information" aka gossip find themselves attracted to each other, in a compromising situation, and obligated to marry? You end up with a Regency-set historical romance about some seriously nosy people getting into difficulties, using intelligence, learning to trust each other, and realizing that their obligation to marry landed them each with the perfect mate like in My Scandalous Viscount, Gaelen Foley's fifth installment of her Inferno Club series.

Carissa Portland is attracted to Sebastian, Viscount Beauchamp against her better judgement. She knows that he has few, if any, morals and yet she cannot stop the frisson of excitement she feels for him. One night at the opera, she spies him exchanging notes to arrange an assignation but she also witnesses another man tamper with the Beau's reply to his paramour. Thinking to warn him out of danger, she tries to intervene for his protection but she's injured in the process. Beau wants to keep a distance between himself and the enticingly nosy lady of information for many reasons, not least of which is that he's a member of the notorious Inferno Club, which is the cover for a clandestine spy agency in the service of the crown. But when Carissa is injured, he unthinkingly takes her to the club to tend to her wounds, leaving her alone long enough for her to snoop her way into possession of very classified information. Both her newfound knowledge and her presence at the club make it imperative that Beau marry Carissa, protecting her good name and his secrets in one fell swoop.

Carissa's stumbling into the secret of the Inferno Club would be bad enough on its own but the club is also under investigation by the government, an investigation led by a hostile man with Jacobite ties. Foley has done a very good job incorporating greater history into this romance through this situation. The book, although mid-series, stands on its own quite well with just enough of the backstory mentioned to connect it to previous books but also to explain what led up to the events here without baffling newer readers or boring established readers. Carissa and Beau and their growing relationship are interesting and fully described without resorting to stock characters or scenes. There is an immediate sexual spark between them and they do not spend pages denying their attraction even once their marriage is inevitable. The secrets they conceal from the other are substantial but their reluctance to trust and share these secrets is understandable and realistic. All in all, a romance that sucks the reader in, presents them with an enticing mystery, and then makes the uncovering of the truth tense and unexpected as the main characters must learn to work in tandem on the way to their happily ever after.
