Fantasy. Fiction. Romance. HTML:

A phone call from an old friend sets Dr. Giovanni Vecchio back on the path of a mysterious manuscript he's hunted for over five hundred years. He never expected a young student librarian could be the key to unlock its secrets, nor could he have predicted the danger she would attract.

Now he and Beatrice De Novo follow a twisted maze that leads from the archives of a university library, though the fires of Renaissance Florence, and toward a confrontation hundreds of years in the making.

History and the paranormal collide in A Hidden Fire, the first book in the bestselling Elemental Mysteries series and semifinalist in the Kindle Book Review's Best Indie Books of 2012.

This moves at a slower pace than I usually like. More of character developement. Ended up getting sucked in ( )

Update Aug. 22, 2022
I will NOT be continuing this series. No sex scenes in this one. Maybe in the next but I don't have time to waste with so many other books to read.

3 Stars ?

A very belated review due to dates being messed up. So, since I have to edit the dates, etc. I might as well leave a review.

I read this back in 2013.
I remember liking it enough that I was interested in checking out the next book in this series. That didn't happen. This is for many different reasons, but mostly because I read so much, that on occasion a book, author or series gets a bit lost in my collection.

Unfortunately, I don't remember if there were any typos, errors and such. I think I remember it being a bit repetitive.

What I do remember is enjoying it enough that I wanted to look up more from this author and seriously consider reading book 2 in this series.
Hopefully, this will fix my GR dates, etc.

I read this series because it was recommended to me since I like The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. I do not like it quite as much as The All Souls Trilogy but it is good nonetheless. I like the librarian aspect and the historical research part but I also think the romance and story line in general is quite well done. It is a series that reads quickly while also keeping you engaged in the plot and characters. ( )

(DNF - please try to convince me otherwise)

I forgot to check up on reviews before buying this books - I got the ebook with audio book bundle...

I initially thought the issue I had with the book (I'm only a couple of chapters in) was with the narrator's inability to stick to accents; B's southern twang comes and goes mid-sentence and Caspar's British (?) accent is atrocious.

But then I decided to read just the ebook and I just couldn't stand how a 500 year old vampire, who's posing as an academic, could speak and act like a teenager.

See, I can forgive Twilight's tweeny-angsty vampires; they took on the identities of high school students and that could affect the way they think. But Gio's supposed to be more mature than that, and I just don't feel it.

Also, there's way too much obsession over the way Gio looks. It would have been fine if I only had to deal with that in B's POV chapters - after all, she's supposed to be attracted to him. But when we see it even in Gio's POV chapters, that's just a bit too narcissistic.

Before I waste anymore time on this book, could someone tell me whether its worth it in the end? (I'm currently at the part where Gio meets B's grandmother for the first time) ( )

CHAPTER ONE: Houston, Texas, September 2003
Giovanni Vecchio woke, the infrequent dream seeming to echo of the narrow wals of the small room where he rested. He sat up and stared at the photograph of Florence which hung on the opposite wall, and the sun-seared shops of the old bridge mocked him

There's something about the father. He was killed ten years ago in Italy. Let me know if anything jumps out at you.
He's getting better darling. Only one little short on the door panel this time. Not that he noticed, of course.
Could he be gay? Oh, what a disappointment.
A really hot, Italian historian with a cute -but not indecipherable-accent.
