Social survey of Broome as a microcosm of multicultural Australia, written in the style of 'new journalism'. Documents the different sides of Broome - tourist town, frontier town, country town, Aboriginal town, and views it as a town with a disregard for how things are done elsewhere. Details various characters the authors encountered during their 9-month stay in Broome, including a woman who runs the local 'hippy' cafe, an art gallery proprietor, and an indigenous bureaucrat, activist and 'town guide'. Varga's previous titles include 'Heddy and Me', winner of the 1994 Christina Stead Award and the novel 'Happy Families'. Coombs is a journalist who has worked for 'Independent Monthly', the 'Australian' and 'HQ' magazine. Previous titles include 'Sex and Anarchy: The life and death of the Sydney Push'.… (mere)

Been trying to read this book since I got to Broome without much success. It's cool to hear about some of the characters they met as I heard other things about them as I go around Broome, but the writing itself is very dull and I find I can't get through it.

Someone else may have better success though. ( )
