Born and raised on the Southside streets of Chicago, better known as “Sickside” Nikky Green struggles to find himself in a world that denies him the opportunities that he yearns for. Struggling to discover his purpose in life, he participates in a crime that he deeply regrets, forcing him to leave for New York with intentions to never return. With no money or support; Nicky is destined to make a name for himself, even if it kills him. He gets that chance when he meets Charlie Black, an underworld businessman who takes Nikki under his wing only to exploit his vulnerability. Now ten years and countless murders later, Nikky’s life takes a turn when he finds out that his loyalty towards Charlie is in jeopardy after discovering that he is only a pawn on his chess board. Taking Losses is a slick, fast paced and cleverly detailed novel that introduces you not only to a man who defied the odds but his wife and child that suffers from his absence. This chain reaction of events sheds light from multiple perspectives regarding love, loyalty, annihilation and spiritual warfare. No library descriptions found. |

From the Sick Side (South Side) of Chicago, Nicky Green is looking for an out. He's ready to be bigger than he is, but he first needs to learn who is he? With an unknown father, more common than not, Nicky is forced to teach himself what it means to be a man. Unfortunately, he allows himself to be mislead, misguided and that leaves him with a lifetime of regrets. Can a possible move to New York change things?
With a new lease on life, Nicky is better prepared for what his future just may hold. When an opportunity arises, he introduces himself to Charlie Black, a known gangster. Nicky sees the value in their friendship. Is he prepared for all that this may entail?
Struggle, karma, murder, love and God fill the pages of "Taking Losses" by Michael McGrew. I really enjoyed how readers were able to transition with Nicky.
I could easily see myself recommending "Taking Losses" to other readers. However, there are some issues. The story is told in first-person via Nicky Green. Eventually it shifts and is told from Nicky, Rochelle, and Leila's views. There is incorrect word usage - `new' instead of `knew' and `brakes' instead of `breaks.' Also, there are places when the story doesn't have the correct tense, too many words, or not enough words. The biggest of all of these transgressions is the title of the book; every other page the title is TALKING Losses instead of TAKING. Even with all of that said, McGrew has given the reader a full story to digest and with the right tools, readers will feast off of him.
Looking forward to what's next.
