Carl and Madeleine explore a dog show. It's not much of a story but for people who like picture books and dogs it's amusing and pretty to flip through. The illustrations are active with plenty of things going on in the pictures, and the dog show itself is pretty accurate to the real thing, with numbered rings, vendors, and dogs in grooming areas wearing ear wraps or snoods and towels. At the back of the book are three pages with pictures of the dog breeds shown throughout the book, shown more or less accurately, and a parent and child or friends could enjoy a seek and find game, looking for the different breeds in the pages.

I enjoy the Carl books and I enjoy this one in particular because of my own time spent at dog shows. A budding dog fan or handler would likely enjoy this as well. ( )

In my opinion, this picture book told a great story. The pictures are extremely descriptive which allowed the readers to understand the story clearly without any words. The pages are filled with color and lots of different things to look at. The illustrations consisted of a variety of different dogs which allows readers to become curious about each dog type. This is a great story for children who haven't mastered reading yet and would love to tell a story on their own. ( )

I enjoy the story line of the book, however, the illustrations make the book. It is a very funny book with beautiful illustrations. Madeline and Carl are the best of friends that have fun in every situation they encounter; although they don't listen! ( )

The central theme of “Carl at the Dog Show” is the importance of play for children and positive relationships between child and dog. Throughout the story Madeleine and the dog Carl spend quality time with each other while getting into mischief during a dog show.

I had mixed feelings about this book after reading it. I liked this book because the illustrations add an extra depth of entertainment to the book. This book would be recommended for children in the lower elementary grades (Pre-K through 1st). One area where this story was lacking would be in plot. There was no character development and little to no plot development. ( )

A book that Carl fans and dog lovers will certainly enjoy. ( )
