This 1990 collection is mostly rooted in Ireland, and I would say that the better stories are set in rural Ireland, in the relatively impoverished 1940s and 50s. Occasionally Trevor turns his attention to the south of England. When a story is set further afield, in Italy or Switzerland, it invaribly deals with the English abroad. My favorite was the last story, "Kathleen's Field," a heart-breakingly simple story of poverty set in 1948 rural Ireland. Trevor's more recent collections of short stories are full of masterpieces. This one seemed to have a few "near misses" and one or two other stories that didn't really come close to hitting their mark. Most of the stories are comfortably "above average," but I don't think this set really represents Trevor at his peak. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

A young couple accept the humiliation handed them by an old man they work for in hope of receiving an inheritance. A man feels privileged to marry a woman expecting another's baby. A headmaster's son wants to protect his sisters and family from the opinions and predatory behavior of his schoolmates. A girl is trapped as a maid in a household so her father can buy a field to be handed down to her brother.
Lost and unconsumated love is a theme. "Why did so unsuitably, so cruelly almost, two people love?" Each story is a complete world, often a cruel and disappointing world, in itself. ( )
