A lovely read for children, especially on a cold winter's evening. ( ![]() A fresh take on a classic poem, Jeffers' illustrations bring a new life to Frost's work. The poem is simple and centers around appreciating nature. The stark contrast between the man in the poem and the snowy landscape make the poem that much more impactful. I can picture this poem being used in a plethora of different activities in an elementary classroom. Beth shared this book in her presentation. Beautiful pictures. Winter focus. She said that she reads once without showing the pictures and then reads again, showing the pictures. A discussion can follow about the different mental pictures that we each have. This single illustrated poem is beautifully illustrated by Susan Jeffers. Her illustrations in black, white and gray with splashes of bright color add to the the mood and tone of this lyric poem. This is a book that kids will select to read if asked to memorize poetry. It is one that can be read to many grade levels. Younger students might approach from the literal level of a man stopping to rest in the woods. A teacher might want to read it during a winter unit, there are a lot of snow activities to tie to the book. Older students can look deeper for figurative language and metaphors such as death and suicide. "Susan Jeffers, [who illustrated this classic poem] says that when she was working on this book, 'around my studio were the woods and animals I love to draw. Many appear in the illustrations--the birds, a deer which often fed outside my window, and a horse named Shanti." Source: The inside page of the book's back cover. The black and white drawings with just small areas of color are unusual and engaging. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
