this book was honestly one of the most beautiful books I've read in a long time. The way the storyline effortlessly weaves from discussing the Latinx/mexican american experience to the way LGBTQ people are perceived within Latinx cultures just had my heart the whole way through. I finished this book last week and haven't stopped being able to think about it. Everyone should read this book! ( )

I loved this book. I think it's a story that either really connects for you or doesn't at all. I wasn't so sure about it for some, in the beginning, but not too far in I really loved the characters. They're such individuals. They don't really fit into any stereotypes for teens. It made them feel more realistic. I really liked being inside their heads and witnessing them growing up as issues happened. ♥︎

Dante meets Ari at a swimming pool with his unexpected offer to teach Ari to swim.
Their friendship takes off!

Ari's introspection - "Feeling sorry for myself was an art." - contrasts with Dante's open heart.

As their friendship grows, Ari gradually evolves from - "The problem with my life was that it was someone else's idea."
toward a more expansive and inclusive love of himself, of life, and of his friend. ( )

Why do we smile? Why do we laugh? Why do we feel alone? Why are we sad and confused? Why do we read poetry? Why do we cry when we see a painting? Why is there a riot in the heart when we love? Why do we feel shame? What is that thing in the pit of your stomach called desire?

One summer night I fell asleep, hoping the world would be different when I woke. In the morning, when I opened my eyes, the world was the same.

I got to thinking that poems were like people. Some people you got right off the bat. Some people you just didn't get - and never would get. (p. 29)
The whole world seemed to be quiet and calm and I wanted to be the world and feel like that. (p. 105)
My mother and father held hands. I wondered what that was like, to hold someone's hand. I bet you could sometimes find all of the mysteries of the universe in someone's hand. (p. 140)
