From Amazon:

Scotland Yard Detective Joe Sandilands is caught off guard one night in 1933 by a phone call from a distressed boy named Jackie Drummond, who just might be the illegitimate son Joe never knew he had. Jackie is in trouble at his Sussex boarding school, where a teacher has been murdered. When Joe gets himself assigned to the investigation, he learns the boarding school case is more complicated than it appears: A frightening number of boys, all from wealthy families, have gone missing over the school’s history, and by some coincidence none of the families have followed up on their sons' whereabouts.

My Thoughts:

Parts of the the book were riveting...you just had to see how easy-going Joe Sandilands was going to handle this latest development. But parts of the book were just plain boring while the author gives us the history of the British government. The story line and the different turns it took as well as the rural English countryside of the time period made the read very worthwhile. It's set in a time...1933...when crime solving science is still evolving. The motive is horrific but not inconceivable... and that makes it the more terrible still. Overall you have an excellent traditional police procedural driven by intelligent dialogue and charismatic characters where the case is solved by following the clues. ( )

Not My Blood is set in England in the 1930's at a boy's preparatory school where several of the lads have disappeared and one of the teaching masters is murdered. Joe Sandilands becomes involved when one of the lads runs to him. The young boy may be Joe's son. The investigation commences as Joe encounters natural selection and testing on afflicted boys. As many writers have hinted, Hitler's testing and super race plans had already begun to surface. The characters and setting are intriguing. The story is fast paced, and enjoyable. ( )

Sandilands in England is interesting, but abroad was more so. I get a little tired of vast conspiracies (like Anne Perry) but Cleverly makes it look good. ( )

Joe Sandilands's "nephew" and possible son flees his boarding school after finding a teacher murdered. Sandilands is drawn into the investigation and uncovers dark doings, including missing students.

Interestingly twisty. ( )

There are lots of good historical mysteries on tap right now, but Barbara Cleverly’s Joe Sandilands series is one of the best, and this latest entry is one of Cleverly’s very cleverest puzzles.

The series was set in the 1920s at the beginning, and we’re now up to 1933 and a very different social and political backdrop from the earlier books. The story begins in the rarefied air of an exclusive boy’s school with a grisly discovery. Sandilands of Scotland Yard isn’t called to the case, but he’s approached by a boy, a student at the school, and asked to investigate.

There’s much more to the case, of course. The boy, Jackie Drummond, may be Sandilands’s son, and he’s also involved in some way with the murder. But as Sandilands delves into the history of the school, he discovers a number of deadly disappearances of highborn youth. Stranger yet, the parents of these youngsters seem never to have followed up the cases.

Cleverly is a terrific writer, and she’s also wonderful at setting a scene. Fans know that she supplies the glamour as well as the grime, and she’s one of the most adept puzzle-plot-makers now working. The clues are all there. But you won’t guess who it is until she gives you the final word.
