A welcome addition to the ever growing literature concerning Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This particular volume concerns Doyle's years spent living at the house known as Undershaw. It seems very detailed and much new information is given to the interested reader. I could have done with a little less of the maybes and the perhaps occuring quite so often in the text. Much mention is made of the diary of Conan Doyle, but there is no tie-in or mention in the brief bibliography. It would be interesting to discover if this elusive diary is available and if so where can one gain a sight of it. While there a capacious footnotes for newspapers and books throughout this book, there is nothing to indicate the whereabouts this most important piece of literary history. For me the most fascinating few pages were those in the final chapter, which showed a series of photographs of the property taken in 2007. The house is in a poor state of repair and plans are afoot to save the house from vandals and the ravages of time. There is in fact a campaign afoot to preserve it,which I fervently hope will succeed. ( ) ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
The late 1890s saw Arthur Conan Doyle return to England after several years abroad. His new house, named Undershaw, represented a fresh start but it was also the beginning of a dramatic decade that saw him fall in love, stand for parliament, fight injustice and be awarded a knighthood. However, for his many admirers, the most important event of that decade was the resurrection of Sherlock Holmes - the character that he felt had cast a shadow over his life.
