January 1988. Martin Pistorius, aged twelve, fell inexplicably sick. First he lost his voice and stopped eating. Then he slept constantly and shunned human contact. Doctors were mystified. Within eighteen months he was mute and wheelchair-bound. Martin's parents were told an unknown degenerative disease left him with the mind of a baby and less than two years to live. Martin was moved to care centers for severely disabled children. The stress and heartache shook his parents' marriage and their family to the core. Their boy was gone. Or so they thought. "Ghost Boy "is the heart-wrenching story of one boy's return to life through the power of love and faith. In these pages, readers see a parent's resilience, the consequences of misdiagnosis, abuse at the hands of cruel caretakers, and the unthinkable duration of Martin's mental alertness betrayed by his lifeless body. We also see a life reclaimed, a business created, and a new love kindled.… (mere)

I loved this book. I liked that he was honest with his struggling and how he coped. The fact that he wrote it all himself and how he overcame everything is always something I enjoy reading. It definitely goes to show that you should not take life for granted. ( )

It was super interesting hearing about how Martin overcame many struggles and learned how to communicate after having locked in syndrome. There were some dull areas of the book, and it definitely was a memoir, not a boon with a real point to it. ( )

To say this story was amazing is an understatement. An illness left this boy in a catatonic state for several years but he then did regains mental awareness without the physical ability to communicate. How this boy found a way to communicate and rejoin the outside world and live a full, happy life was astonishing. And though there are many horrible instances of abuse at the hands of his care workers, there were also those who aided him in his recovery and re-discovery of the world, particularly the first worker who realized he was aware and trying to communicate. This is a very uplifting story that I highly recommend it. ( )
