Count-A-Sauru, by Nancy Blumenthal, is a counting concept book from one to 10 about dinosaurs. Each page counts a specific dinosaur, i.e. “Seven Plesiosaurus swimming in the seas.” The pastel colored pictures, illustrated by Robert Jay Kaufman, consume the majority of the pages, with the text at the bottom of each page. The number featured on each page is in numeric form and written out at the beginning of each sentence. The sentences rhyme from page to page, and there are pronunciations of each dinosaur to help the reader/listener learn how to say the name correctly. In the back of the book is the “Append-A-Saurus” where more detailed information about each of the dinosaurs can be found. Young children will have fun counting the dinosaurs, while older children will enjoy learn more factual information about the pre-historic creatures. When comparing this counting concept book to that of Bear In A Square, by Stella Blackstone, this book seems to be lacking in the dynamics of the illustrations. Blackstone’s book, illustrated by Debbie Harter, is much more colorful and interesting to look at compared to the illustrations by Kaufman. What is unique about this book is the “append-a-saurus” at the end which is intriguing and will capture an older audience, more than the simplicity of the counting 1-10 offered by both books. ( )
