During the space of a day in Rome in 1933, a ten-lira coin passes through the hands of nine people--including an aging artist, a prostitute, and a would-be assassin of Mussolini. The coin becomes the symbol of contact between human beings, each lost in private passions and nearly impenetrable solitude. The studied perfection, the structural intricacy and brevity remind one of Camus.

This book consists of a series of vignettes of people living in Rome in 1933, during Mussolini's dictatorship. At first, there is no evident linkage beside the 10 lira piece than each character passes to another. As the novel progresses, however, real connections emerge between characters, creating a web that centers on a group of political dissidents. The story is interesting, if at times rather hard to follow -- memory becomes confused with reality, art with facts. The style is poetic, with some (perhaps a few too many) striking phrases. An interesting read, but a bit of a disappointment if compared with "Hadrian's Memoirs". ( )
