My reactions
I wish this had brought about the destruction of this book. He comes off as being about 10 years old, not seventeen. His “humor” is juvenile, mostly related to bathroom and bodily functions. His attempts at self-deprecation were just sad and sometimes even disturbing. I kept reading because it had some rave reviews, and I thought it might get better. (It didn’t.) I finished it only because it satisfied a few challenges.

A complete waste of time, IMHO. ( )

Overly crude but often hilarious. I'm not sure what I was supposed to get out of it other than the true nature of a teenage boy. Which is to say (and often said in the book), no deeper meaning.

Ma cos'è questa roba? è la domanda più frequente che mi rimbalzava nella testa durante la lettura di Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Sappiate che in duecentonovantacinque pagine non sono riuscita a darmi una risposta. Dubito anche che sia un romanzo: sembra più un insieme di farneticazioni sparse.

La cosa positiva è: l'autore è consapevole della porcheria che ha scritto. Il protagonista – si tratta di una... cosa... scritta in prima persona – ci ripete in continuazione che non sa cosa stia scrivendo, che è tutta una schifezza e variazioni sul tema. Ora mi chiedo: perché hai dovuto renderci partecipi della tua scrittura allo stato brado? Ci sono alcune ipotesi.

(1) La fame è brutta.
(2) Si tratta di un messaggio in codice, la cui chiave di lettura è stata smarrita nella Fossa delle Marianne.
(3) È solo un espediente letterario: l'autore non pensava davvero di scrivere una schifezza.

L'ipotesi che sia un espediente letterario non regge: il... la cosa è talmente povera su qualunque fronte che l'ipotesi decade. Infatti, la trama, semplicemente, non esiste – e se c'è è molto, molto lontana. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl intende per trama una serie di gag che hanno a che fare con le persone nominate nel titolo, cioè il protagonista, il suo migliore amico Earl e la ragazza morente Rachel.

Poi chiamarle gag dà l'impressione che siano divertenti. Forse lo sarebbero state un secolo fa, quando ancora erano inedite. L'assunzione inconsapevole di droga e conseguente figure di cacca? Genitori e insegnati che capiscono fischi quando tu intendi dire fiaschi? Ragazzi, questa è proprio l'avanguardia della comicità – di cento anni fa.

Vogliamo parlare dello stile? Ehm... quale stile? Sì, sì, è un romanzo per adolescenti, ma perché devono sempre parlare così male? Credo che se avessi letto ancora una volta la parola suck, avrei vomitato. Per non parlare del quantitativo spropositato di f*ck che Earl è in grado di inserire in un discorso. Neanche mio fratello, che non è un adolescente azzimato, ne sarebbe capace.

Ora in tutto questo, speravo che almeno il messaggio, il senso di questo accozzamento di parole lo rendesse degno del mio tempo perso. Mah. Letta l'ultima pagina, mi è sembrata una predica moralista al contrario. Di solito leggiamo di scene di persone malate costruite ad hoc per farci scendere la lacrimuccia? Bene, Jesse Andrews ci fa leggere di scene che fanno scendere qualcos'altro, con tanto di discorsetto finale sul senso della vita (c'era qualcosa del genere nascosto dietro a tutti quei f*ck). ( )

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is such a unique read with it's mix of story telling in typical paragraph format but also in screen-writing/script format.

This book hit hard. My Dad had the same kind of cancer "The Dying Girl" has and I honestly didn't realize this was going to be a book with cancer in it. Yeah, I should have known (what else was a teenager likely going to die from?), but boy... This one hit right in the heart.

Regardless, this is an interesting contemporary tale of friends making memories together. It's a tough read emotionally, and it's kind of "make the best of what you can" kind of story. There's incredible sarcasm and horrible humour, and also lots of introspection near the end of when death really hits you. You can tell this book is just about kids in a really crappy situation.

Don't expect a love story. This is just a book about kids being kids.

That was really funny. Dark funny. Easy read without have a bad writing style. Actually no writing style at all. ( )
