Set in the 17th century in the United States, this novel features a teenage girl who travels from Barbados - where she has been brought up by an indulgent and wealthy grandfather - to live with her aunt and family, after losing her grandfather and his estate. Her new relatives are strict Puritans and there are many clashes.

I borrowed the book from friends and it took a few pages to get into the story, but once I did I was hooked. The style is engaging, the main characters three dimensional, and the background is one I knew very little about. I found some of the attitudes quite shocking.

There's a very low key romance - more than one, actually - and lots of drama in this very well written book. Intended for older children and teens, but I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to know a little more about this period in American history.

This is one of my favorite books by far that I read in middle school. This book takes place back during the Puritan age in Colonial Connecticut. The main character is Kit Tyler who is 16 years old and just lost her grandfather in Barbados so she has moved in with her aunt’s family. Throughout the book, Kit struggles with fitting in because she knows how to read and write unlike other girls. Kit discovers a Quaker named Hannah who the Puritans despise because of her beliefs. Numerous people try to condemn Kit of being a witch and she goes to court because of it. During the whole book, Kit also has a love interest, Nat, who sweeps her off her feet, Because he is the sailors son, Kit only gets to see him every so often. But you will not be disappointed.it’s such a great book! ( )

One of my favorite childhood books - there is a richness to this simple children's book that awes me every time I read it. Love the honest look at Puritan life, the fish out of water analogies, and the very mild but lovely romance. I can so identify with Kit's headstrong approach and inability to restrain herself at times! Quick read that will leave you satisfied! ( )

Not about actual witches. A novel of life among Puritans in 1680s.

"Still dazed, Hannah accepted the miracle and the prospect of a journey like a docile child. Then after two shaky steps she turned obstinate. She would not set foot in the boat without her cat."
