Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman's suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things and people aren't always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It's no easy job, especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force. Add to this the fact that, as a Catholic policeman, it doesn't matter which side he's on because nobody trusts him, and Sergeant Duffy really is in a no-win situation.… (mere)

The Cold Cold Ground. Book one: The Troubles Trilogy. A Detective Sean Duffy Novel. Adrian McKinty. 2012. The world is in a tizzy over the upcoming marriage of Charles and Di, and the pope has been shot when Oxford-educated Detective Duffy, the only Catholic in the Royal Ulster Constabulary, is called to investigate a murder of a gay man. Before he gets a handle on it, another murder occurs so he hunts for a serial murderer of gay men. However it doesn’t take him long to realize that the murders may be a cover for something else. Before it is over the IRA and M15 are involved. Duffy is a great character, the plots twists are exciting, and the setting is fascinating. Looking forward to reading more! ( )

This is#1 of the Detective Sean Duffy series which has now reached #7 with the publication of "The Detective Up Late" in 2023. McKinty tells us in the afterword that he wanted to write about the experience of growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

Sean Duffy is a very well educated and well off young policeman (I didn't catch where he got his money but he drives a flash car and buys lots of records). Sean is also a Catholic policeman in a sea of Protestants. His life is in constant danger but he gets on with his work.

It's a very good book with nice dialect and realistic settings. I know Belfast people who are about Duffy's age and their stories sound like this. ( )

I was hoping to like this more than I did. My grandfather was in the IRA so I was automatically interested in the political backdrop, but I was surprised at how often my attention flagged. I was almost surprised at the whodunnit reveal because the murderer's identity seemed so obvious early on that I assumed it was a red herring. The circumstances behind the murders presented an interesting twist, but not quite enough to make up for the somewhat flat main characters. ( )

I loved the setting of Belfast in the 80's. The book was a slow burn and the writing was nice. There were a few plot points that I found a little wonky but not enough that I won't read the next book. The Belfast setting alone (with all the descriptions) was worth reading this book by itself. ( )

2023 book #56: 2012. Police Sgt. Sean Duffy is stationed in a small town outside Belfast in 1981, during "The Troubles" trying to solve a murder which may be a simple crime or the work of a serial killer. Good police procedural set in a place which made ordinary police dangereous ( )
