2nd to 5th grade. Escaping Titanic will inspire emerging readers to persevere in order to find out what happens to the main character. A biography, this level 3 early reader is a true story about how one teenager survived the Titanic. Ruth Becker was only 12 years old and traveling with her mother and two smaller siblings. The book is told from a limited omniscient perspective in that we only know what the character knows in the moment. In the beginning of the book Ruth and her siblings enjoy finding their room and exploring the ship. Then one night the steward opens their cabin door and we begin to follow the characters through the well known last terrible events on the Titanic. Lorbiecki paces the story well and develops Ruth's character so that readers will empathize with her such as when she is divided from her family while boarding lifeboats or how she aids the row man. Kory S. Heinzen's computer illustrations pair nicely with Ruth's story with their sepia tones, expressive faces, and dramatic perspectives. It would work well with reluctant readers as well. This book is recommended to public and elementary library collections. It will be a hit with kids devouring as much as they can of books on the Titanic. ( )
