Do you know what a gull is? No, it’s not the opposite of a buoy (little joke there—you’re supposed to laugh). A gull is a bird that spends most of its life near water, both saltwater and freshwater. Seagull is a Herring Gull who lives along the Atlantic Ocean seashore. It is May, so it is time for her to find a mate, build a nest, lay her eggs, and hatch her chicks. What do gulls eat, and how do they find their food? What kinds of dangers do Seagull and her family face? And will her chicks survive?
Author Vanessa Giancamilli Birch and illustrator Alton Langford combine their talents to provide fascinating information about seagulls and neat visual images of them and their habitat. Did you know that while gulls prefer fresh water to drink they have special glands that allow them to get rid of salt and make seawater drinkable? There is a page that contains further material about the Herring Gull, a glossary, and a list of points of interest in the book. In addition, a downloadable read-along audiobook is available at the publisher’s website. The fusing of fact and fiction along with the color illustrations makes this book, part of the Smithsonian Oceanic Collection, a delightful recommendation. ( )
