When I first started this book, I hated it. I thought it's The Bachelor for teenagers! I only stuck with it because so many of my little girls loved and recommended it. Then it got better. Still not a great novel, but kept we wanting to read more! I really wanted to find out who he picks! Then, much to my dismay, one of my students tells me, "oh, you don't find out until the third book!" What?? She was right. The book just ended, so now I have to read The Elite! I don't really want to, but I'm going to. ( )

The story is interesting and it moves along quickly. The futuristic country that the USA has become reminds me of that in "The Hunger Games" - with differences. I'll read the next one. ( )

I found this book entertaining enough to read through until the end, but unfortunately, it started to feel flat to me toward the end. I normally don't read much YA, but the combination of The Hunger Games and The Bachelor made me interested enough to take a peek. Plus, the cover art is super pretty!

I enjoyed the beginning, where we were introduced to the MC, her family, and her initial love interest. Then she gets into The Selection, and for me, it began to devolve from there and became quite predictable. It was also hard to connect with the characters because we never got to know much about them, and they weren't fully fleshed out. And, the MC began to come off as a Mary Sue as the story progressed. I never quite got into Maxon's character, either...he seemed a bit silly to me. And then a love triangle developed...I'm generally not a fan of those because I've rarely seen them done well.

The writing was good and moved along at a nice pace, even if it dragged somewhat in the middle.

It was still a fun read, and while I liked it, I didn't love it, and I'm mildly interested in knowing what happens enough...although I think I can probably guess what the ending is going to be. I may be wrong, but I'm not interested enough to read the sequels to find out. But, while it was not for me, I can see how others would like it! ( )
