Christian Nonfiction. Religion & Spirituality. Nonfiction. HTML:

See it. Study it. Do it. Many Christians focus on mechanical application of the Scriptures. In Experience Your Bible, the McDowells proclaim God's original designâ??the Scriptures are his way to reveal himself so he can enjoy a relationship with people. The authors show how the Bible can radically transform believers' lives:

  • Intimacy. God created humans such that an intimate relationship with him is their only route to meaningful life. His written Word enables this relationship.
    • Relational experience. We must obey God's commands. Yet he also wants us to relationally experience things like acceptance, joy, and comfort with him and other believers.
    • Growth in love. Josh and Sean highlight the Holy Spirit's role in illuminating the Scriptures. They present proven tools to help readers study and "accurately handle the word of truth." Above all, they emphasize that study is the journey to help Christians more deeply love the author of the Bible, God himself. When Christians experience the Bible and its author, they find wisdom, meaning, and fulfillment in life. A key tool for pastors, leaders, parents, and youth workersâ??anyone wanting to proclaim and experience the life- and culture-changing Christianity the Bible reveals.

NCLA Review: As father and son authors, Josh and Sean McDowell acknowledge, the Bible is not an easy book to read or understand. So many Christians find reading the Bible to be a daunting, difficult or labor-intensive task. The McDowells’ goal is to make the Bible as clear as possible, to break it down, preach it, teach it and explain its meaning to all, both layman and scholar. After all, God intended His word to be understood. God certainly wants us to be able to discern His truth. Over the years there have been so many books written to help readers interpret Scriptures. This book would be at the top of my list. These authors have made the Bible and the Word of God clear. They have helped to open up the communication lines to understanding and discernment. The expositional approach does not overwhelm the layperson. The authors teach their readers how to teach themselves. This should be a seminal work for all Bible study groups. Josh McDowell has authored or coauthored 120 books. Sean McDowell is author and co-author of several books and is pursuing a Ph.D. in apologetics. Included are additional resources including how to paraphrase, conduct topical and biographical studies, and a reference chart for a Crisis Bible study. Rating: 4 —MF ( )
