A distant dream from the current time - but far from being the end. Some of these ideas seem brilliant, some vague, and a few (the trade agreements with Panama, S. Korea, etc.) are already in progress. After all, why not just try everything, and see what sticks? He keeps returns to attack the small government movement, but he is not always partisan in his attacks nor in his praise. He always returns briefly to the subject of jobs on each issue he addresses. The last chapter addresses changes he believes would move our country forward. The book is interesting, but either won’t provide a lot of new information or the reader won’t be ready to accept it. In Back to Work, Clinton details how we can get out of the current economic crisis and lay a foundation for long-term prosperity. He offers specific recommendations on how we can put people back to work and create new businesses, increase bank lending and corporate investment, double our exports, and restore our manufacturing base. He supports President Obama??s emphasis on green technology, saying that change in the way we produce and consume energy is the strategy most likely to spark a fast-growing economy and enhance our national security. Clinton also says that we need both a strong economy and a smart government working together to restore prosperity and progress. He demonstrates that whenever we??ve given in to the temptation to blame government for our problems, we??ve lost our commitment to shared prosperity, balanced growth, financial responsibility, and investment in the future. That has led our nation into trouble because there are some things we have to do together. For example, he says, ??Our ability to compete in the twenty-first century is dependent on our willingness to invest in infrastructure: we need faster broadband, a state-of-the-art national electrical grid, modernized water and sewer systems, and the best airports, trains, roads, and bridges. ??There is no evidence that we can succeed in the twenty-first century with an antigovernment strategy,? writes Clinton, ??with a philosophy grounded in ??You??re on your own?? rather than ??We??re all in this together.??? Clinton believes that conflict between government and the private sector has proved to be remarkably good politics, but it has produced bad policies, giving us a weak economy with few jobs, growing income inequality and poverty, and a decline in our competitive position. People may claim that Clinton was the beneficiary of a boom in tech stocks during his presidency, and rode that wave to economic prosperity and a reduction in the Country's deficit, and that Bush was unlucky due to the 9/11 terrorist attack on our Country, which indirectly led to a loss of jobs, a collapsing economy, and a growing deficit. As a result, the Clinton economy worked out better than the Bush economy. Alternatively, it may be that the Clinton programs and approach works better than the Bush approach. It'll be interesting to compare the two books and respective recommendations.
Starting with Clinton's book "Back To Work", I think Clinton brings out many effective points, and provides a number of recommendations which make sense. And he's got plenty of facts and figures to support his claims. You may not have liked him personally, but he does make some good points, and the book is not simply a dry list of facts and recommendations. His analysis is crisp and clear, with practical examples of why some ideas do work, and why other ideas (e.g., a strict and uncompromising Tea Party approach in all circumstances) historically do not work.
