When I picked this book out, it was because it was a story about trains to me. When reading it, it became more because it was based on what they did to new trains in 2001. Jessie, a subway car, had positive human characteristics for a nonliving object. She devoted herself to helping others and serving the community through transportation and when she became of no use, she became sad and still thought about all those other people. After being dumped into the ocean and become a home for fish and coral reefs, she felt a sense of relief that she could still be of use. The message of this story was to inform readers about a real subway car in a fictional story about the lifespan of a subway train from 1964-2001. ( )

Subway Story is a book about the life of a subway car. It starts out in her brand new days and encompasses the changes of the city and railway system through the sixties and seventies. Eventually the subway car is re purposed as a new home for ocean animals and plants in the Atlantic.

I liked this story because I had never even known about the plan to re purpose subway cars for this reason and when checking the factual basis of this story learned so much more about this project that indeed re homed over 2500 subway cars into the Atlantic.

I think this book could be used in class to prompt a discussion about other ways we can re purpose old things instead of throwing them out, and the importance of recycling on the environment. It would also be a good story when discussing ocean life and the children could then decorate their own under water subway car and fill it with many different plants and animals found in the ocean. Subway story is the story about Jessie the subway car. It goes from the beginning when she was shiny new subway car to the end when she get's recycled as an artificial reef in the ocean. I especially like the illustrations and the fact that the story is based on a story about a real subway car, as it says in the author's note. All in all a very informative and entertaining book for children! ( )

See the New York subway through the eyes of a 1960's subway car. It is based on a true story of an environmetal project using these cars. Sweet, as well as informative; the book was entertaining. ( )
