In 1956, Dell Parsons' family came to a stop in Great Falls, Montana, the way many military families did after the war. His father, Bev, was a talkative airman from Alabama with an optimistic and easy-scheming nature. Their mother Neeva - shy, artistic - was alienated from their father's small-town world. It was more bad instincts and bad luck that Dell's parents decided to rob the bank. They weren't reckless people. In the days following the arrest, Dell is saved before the authorities think to arrive. Driving across Montana, his life hurtles towards the unknown; a hotel in a deserted town, the violent and enigmatic Arthur Remlinger, and towards Canada itself. But, as Dell discovers, in this new world of secrets and upheaval, he is not the only one whose past lies on the other side of a border.… (mere)

I’ve read a lot of Richard Ford’s novels and while I can’t say I love any of them he continually amazes me.

With his characters, we always seem to spend an inordinate amount of time in the mind of the narrator / protagonist. With a less skilled writer this would be a disaster (at least for me. I want action). But he pulls it off. I guess largely because he creates characters who have such keen insights and observations.

The events of this novel are dramatic – parents rob a bank, leaving their 15 year old twins to fend for themselves. The girl immediately leaves the stage and the boy, Dell is shipped off by a family friend to an obscure outpost in Canada.

Ford takes pains to tell us what is going to happen before it happens. Sort of making the book an anti-suspense novel.

I had the feeling it was as though I was reading two short novels that had been spliced together. The family’s life before the robbery with a lot of focus on the parents. And then the life after the robbery, in which the sole focus is on the boy, Dell.

It doesn’t seem like an appealing structure for a story that had such great dramatic potential but when I finished the book I was satisfied. And impressed.

And of course, Richard Ford has an incredible ability to paint detailed scenes. He captures the times and the era remarkably well.

This really is a beautiful book, the writing is very patient, lots of description even as not much happens, you're right there with the protagonist and his thoughts. It's a long book but each chapter is very short, so there's some sense of progress moving from chapter to chapter quickly. The whole book is the recollection of an older person, but it's easy to forget that and imagine the story about a young person is told by a young person - but the conclusion, where the older Dell reflects on what it was all about, what having a life, a life you enjoy, a life surviving trauma - wow. Really moving. ( )

Good, but not his best. ( )

I found this book too unpleasant and unsettling to finish. The opening sentence is an attention grabber, to be sure but then it continues in that vein as far as I read. The impending sense of doom following a poorly planned bank robbery. ( )
