So this appears to be a prequel novella and I will go out on a limb and say it might be possible to go the series itself first. But why would ya, eh? This seems like a good set-up to a main story-line. I enjoyed the technology, the descriptions sound so possible! The way the ships worked sound precisely like something humanity will some day be able to make.
