I have read several books about this time period and this is a great one volume starter for anyone interested. ( )

I wanted to read Peter Ackroyd's "Foundation" on the history of England because I am getting ready to read Nancy Goldstone's "Four Queens" and a series of Philippa Gregory books. I loved the way Peter Ackroyd seamlessly moved between the kings of England, the traditions of the people, and popular misconceptions. The book had a good pace and it kept me wanting more. I am going to see what else he has written. ( )

I read the second book to this 5 book series, Tudors: The History of England from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I back in 2018 not knowing it was the 2nd in a series until I marked it as "currently reading" here on Goodreads. I'm correcting that wrong by reading the entire series - in order - now that it's 2021.
This book was very well done. I enjoyed reading it, and I think that Ackroyd does a good job in detailing England's history up to the Tudor dynasty. Ackroyd's attention to chronicling England's history from, as the title says, "its earliest beginnings to the Tudors," shows within the book. I think that Ackroyd's work has, so far, broadened my understanding of the country and its history. I recommend this - and hopefully the next 4 books in this series - as a read. ( )

I finished this book with very mixed feelings. Admiration for the clear and lively retelling of some of the basic stories of our history; and dismay at the thought of another five volumes like this one, where the narrative is weighed down by its embroidery of speculation, question-begging, sententiousness and sheer whimsy.
