The book takes you through the Sonoran desert, and teaches you about the life, and sounds there. I think this book is excellent for English language learners, and especially good for exposing students to southwest culture and Spanish. The book has a lot of rhythmic word schemes, and onomatopoeia. ( )

Great for children to know that the desert makes noise and to listen for it.

Listen to the Desert is a bilingual book that uses the power of rhymes and onomatopoeia. This can be used to enhance children's language skills in multiple ways. By using repetition on each page, children are given the opportunity to practice pronunciation skills if they're trying to learn either Spanish or English. Repeating new vocabulary several times out loud is a popular studying technique as well. The fact that this is s picture book is also helpful as students can use context clues and pictures to help break down new words or phrases both in their new and native languages. ( )

Oye al Desierto by Pat Mora is a classical children’s picture book that teaches children about the desert. What kinds of animals live in the desert? What kinds of sounds do they make? What does the desert look like? What kinds of sounds does it make?
The book teaches children to listen closely to the distinctive sounds of a particular environment (in this case, the desert), one of the things that makes that environment special and different from others. The book is illustrated by Fransisco X. Mora in classical southwestern artistic style. The illustrations are tasteful and effectively communicate the purpose of the book’s desert theme.
