Adair Radcliffe is only a child when her family perishes in the War of the Roses, so her real father, the womanizing King Edward IV, takes her in, honoring his promise to her mother. Once Adair turns sixteen, the king marries her off without her knowledge - and to her later outrage - in a wedding by proxy. But when tragedy leaves her a widow twice over, Adair realizes that her already tenuous social position has sunk even lower. Now, all she can do is hope that the Scottish laird to whom she is sold will have mercy on her. But little does master or servant suspect that love knows no rank.… (mere)

I love historical romance. I love scottish/english stories. I did not love this book.
Poor Adair loses her home and everyone she knows save her nanny on the same day. She travels to her king/father who takes her in and proceeds to ignore her until he uses her as a bargaining chip and gives her away in marriage. She escapes the marriage and ends up making her own marriage of convience. She loves Andrew until he dies and then maybe she didn't love him? wtf? It lost me there. I plugged on until it was over but I do not think I will be reading any more of these books. ( )

I didn't like this book at all. I thought it was bit long wind. I never read anything by Bertrice Small before and I don't know if I will again. I wanted something light to read between books and I had to slog through a poorly written historical fiction book/romance novel. ( )

I enjoyed other books in the Border Chronicles series rather more. I found this one to be just going through the motions. ( )
