Umm...I think I loved it because I loved the movie when I was 13? ( )

Not as epic or well-written as works like Jurassic Park. I feel like he tried too hard to make this interesting but ran out of energy. The first half is a bit slow and has too much scientific jargon, but picks up quite a bit in the second half. Some of the human characters don't feel well written and the author has to keep pointing out their personality flaws/traits over and over again as for-shadowing to something bad happening later. The build up was well done but the ending felt rushed and abrupt. ( )

I am a huge Michael Crichton fan already, and he did not disappoint me with this. Amy the gorilla stole the show for me, with her 'teenage antics' and bad language. I love how he created a series of ambitious, intelligent, skilled and yet highly flawed characters each trying to further their own agendas.

Another thing that will always be a selling point for me was the distinct lack of any sort of forced romance between the characters. It is such a relief sometimes when the characters actually focus on their mission without the need to clutter it up with weirdly intense and unhealthy whirlwind romances. The story is more than enough without it!

Overall this was a brilliant story, with a fascinating plot line steeped in science (although most of it is probably outdated now, and some of it is definitely questionable which Crichton himself was happy enough to point out at times). The narration was also top notch with everyone given their own clear voice (listened to on Audible read by Julia Whelan). ( )

This is the first book I've read by this author. It was suggested by the daughter of a dear friend and I want to thank her for this recommendation.

The timeline for Congo is in the late 1970's, early 1980's, with a scientific expedition from the US in search of three things: (1) to locate blue diamonds which are used in computer hardware applications, (2) to try to determine what happened to a previous scientific expedition when the entire team was murdered, and (3) to find the Lost City of Zinj. Mr. Crichton must have done a tremendous amount of research to write this techno-thriller which blended facts and plenty of action. I learned a lot about tropical rain forests, gorillas, African ecosystems, and I was entertained with suspense at the same time.

I liked the realistic atmosphere, the twists and turns, and I especially loved Amy, a gorilla who had been in captivity since orphaned as a baby. She had been under the care of the Department of Zoology at the University of California at Berkeley and taught 620 words in American sign language. The relationship between Amy and her caretaker was moving and left me wanting to read more about Amy.

I had a problem understanding all the technical talk and the terms used. Of course, technology from the time period when this book was written has been updated very much. However, it's an edgy novel, ahead of its time, and extremely interesting. Highly recommended with 4 Stars! ( )

The more experience and insight I obtain into human nature, the more convinced do I become that the greater portion of a man is purely animal. --Henry Morton Stanley, 1887
The large male [gorilla] held my attention. . . . He gave an impression of dignity and restrained power, of absolute certainty in his majestic appearance. I felt a desire to communicate with him. . . . Never before had I had this feeling on meeting an animal. As we watched each other across the valley, I wondered if he recognized the kinship that bound us. --George B. Schaller, 1964

Dawn came to the Congo rain forest. The pale sun burned away the morning chill and the clinging damp mist, revealing a gigantic silent world.
