The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered--fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. This book is the final book to the Divergent Series. I didn't find this book as interesting as the other two. Because of the POV switch, I was confused about who was talking. And it was a bit boring when the characters are separated. ( )

I didn't hate it but I didn't love it. For a series that started out so strong and hard to put down, I'm disappointed in the last book. Too much focus on the romance which I think took away from some of it (and I'm a sucker for a romance). No spoilers here so I won't say much more. I will say that the back and forth of the character narrator didn't bother me so much as it did take what I thought was a strong character and completely change my viewpoint on that character by getting to know their inner thoughts/feelings. I'm finding it difficult to separate my disappointment over specific occurrences in the final chapters of Allegiant with my overall love of the book. So . . . focusing one the positive I love, love, love that the main hero is female who can fend for herself and still carry on a romance. I'm also in awe of Roth's clever social and political commentary, wrapped in the guise of an intriguing--and at times heart wrenching-- adventure. ( )

Spoiler Alert! Seriously? with such shallow characters and just starting into a multi-dimensional story (within the last half of the book) you kill off the lead character? Stupid. I feel like I wasted WAY too much time investing myself into each of the books just hoping it would get better... to no avail. Save your time reading and just go see the movies when they come out. I enjoyed this book a lot more than I did the previous two. I'll try and hash out my ALLEGIANT-flavored feelings in a detailed review later this week, probably after Monday. I need to think about this book as well as the trilogy as a whole before I can.

Update: I'll keep this short...ish. A lot of spoilers for how ALLEGIANT ends, thus the "hide because spoilers" option being enabled. Also, spoilers for the other two books, because yeah.

As usual, I hated the clunky writing style, the overemphasis on heavy handed similes and metaphors, the obnoxious Tris/Four relationship, the idea that factions are a thing still worth saving, and the demonization of intellectual/academic/scientific types as the main villains.

Seriously, every group of "smart" folks in this series have turned out to be bad folks. After the fall of the Erudite, this series needed another group of eggheads to make into power hungry scientists who see humans as guinea pigs and lack basic empathy and GLASSES FOR DECORATION UGH, therefore we quickly meet the people outside the city who have been controlling Chicago's factions in a series of experiments. Honestly, the whole "war broke out over DNA traits, we turned select cities into places to test theories about genetics, it didn't end well" is kind of dumb and I hate it.

The split narrative between Tris and Four was interesting but not that well executed. Their POVs read the exact same way, so sometimes I forgot whose POV I was reading.

But I liked the ending. I liked that Tris saw through her brother's bullshit about self-sacrifice and realized that losing Caleb wouldn't solve anything. I liked that the series turned Tris' death into something memorable, something that defined her finally as someone brave and smart and heroic and kind - Abnegation and Dauntless and Erudite, all in one. Honestly, this series has been telegraphing Tris' demise for the longest of times, so it wasn't a surprise.

I'm glad Roth took the time to show how Four copes with losing Tris, that grief takes many forms and that the loss of one life doesn't mean the end of everyone else's. I hope Four can find the strength and the courage to love himself and keep Tris' memories alive in her absence.

All right. I don't really have much else to say about this one. Bye, DIVERGENT. Until we meet again. ( )
