I don’t understand why Uhtred still isn’t trusted, the books would be a lot shorter if they listened to him. ( )

As the ninth century wanes, England is perched once more on the brink of chaos. KIng Alfred is dying; with his passing, the island of Britain. Seems doomed to renewed warfare. Alfred wants his son Edward to succeed him, but there are other claimants to the throne-as well as other ambitious pagan Vikings to the north. Uhtred’s loyalty is toAlfred, not Edward. His desire is to reclaim his ancestral lands from his uncle. ( )

Book #6 in The Saxon Chronicles series. There are many significant deaths in this book: King Alfred, Aethelwold (pretender to the throne), and the King of East Anglia. Aethelflaed (King Alfred's daughter) is kidnapped by Aethelwold, Uhtred saves her, but not before he is bound naked by a prophetess and a curse placed on him. He eventually escapes. Too many Aethel's! This was probably the best book in the series thus far. 336 pages ( )

The story keeps moving but I wonder if it hasn’t become somewhat formulaic. But I like the characters (and think Aethelflaed in the books is better than in the show - and I thinks she’s great in the show) and that overcomes any formula issues. ( )
