Far more complicated than I expected, this book goes WAY farther than just a quirky version of Cinderella. While the two big twist moments were still ones I predicted very early on, the world and the relationships between the characters are well developed and fascinating. ( )

Book 6 of getting through books I've had on my shelves for too long without reading. I originally purchased this book for my teenage daughter and she wasn't to fond of it so it sat on my shelf for quite a long time, I was expecting not to enjoy this book but I was wrong and it goes to show my youngest and myself have quite different tastes in books we enjoy, not that there is nothing wrong with that. In fact when I recommend books I always acknowledge that what I enjoy others might not necessarily enjoy and vice versa.

Cinder was a slow start for me and a bit predictable at times and to be honest I almost dnf'ed it but I gave it a shot and I am so happy I did. Cinder's smart and sassy attitude and her gumption to continue forward despite her odds is inspiring like a good fairytale protagonist should be. The cyborg/human futuristic retelling of Cinderella is definitely a different twist to this fairytale and one that truly hooked me in. Marissa story telling consists with some of my favorite things - fairytale, androids, smart technology, futuristic and of course those pesky villains wanting to take over the world.

The book version I read included the short story Glitches at the end of Cinder which should have been the beginning of Cinder in my opinion. I mention it because this is why I gave Cinder 5/5 star rating. I feel this short story should have been included as the beginning of Cinder. It gives you the backdrop to how Cinder comes to live with her stepmother/guardian Adri and her two stepsisters Pearl and Peony. It was so fitting and I really wished Marissa had begun Cinder with this but it's okay I loved the book anyway but for future reference 😄.

Characters that I feel worth mentioning:

Cinder is a character you love to root for, she isn't your typical damsel in distress and has so much character you can't help but love.

Peony - adorable little sister that just melts your heart 🥰

Pearl - annoying older sister but to be fair there isn't much character development for her other than you know she is the typical hateful step sister.

Adri - stepmother/guardian, your average "evil stepmother" but I feel there was much more to her that just wasn't fully written in, I am not sure if the rest of this series ties these characters together in the end but I feel more development could have gone into Adri. There are moments in the story where I was like "she is so hateful, what is her deal" but then there was a few where I'm like she isn't so bad but it never went any further than her crying for her husband or daughter. I would have like to finally get a fairytale retelling that tells us more about the stepmother.

Dr. Earland - scientist/fairy godmother? this was an interesting character but again so much more could've gone to this character but I love him all the same, I just used my imagination to fit the missing pieces of him. You get enough of his story to understand why he does what he does but I guess I wanted a bit more interaction between him and Cinder.

and last but not least IKO, this little android captivated me and I loved her so much that I wanted my own little IKO.

All in all I do feel this retelling did a good job to keep some of the Cinderella premises but also gave its own take with these new futuristic and sci-fi elements. I can't wait to finish the series and look forward (hoping it all ties together). I know this series has been out for a while but this is the first time I started reading it so I will not be looking up spoilers.

5/5 ✨✨✨✨✨

recommend if you like Retellings, Sci-fi, Androids ( )

Can’t believe I’ve had this on my TBR for so long. I really enjoyed this book. Some of it was quite predictable. It was easy to know who Cinder really was but the journey to others find out was quite enjoyable ( )

This is a familiar fairytale turned into a YA sci-fi story with an interesting protagonist. A little bit of romance, some magic, some science fiction and some dystopia all mix together in a fun way.

I'm not sure how this made it to my radar but it did and while it took several tries before the story grabbed me now it has me completely - for once I'm glad to have a cliffhanger ending and I'm looking forward to Cinder's next adventure. ( )

At first, I feared this was going to hew too closely to the Cinderella template to be really enjoyable. But that fear was quickly dispelled. Meyer is creating touching, believable characters in an interesting SF/fantasy setting. I loved this book and look forward to the sequels. (That said, I would have preferred that all the books had been published as a single, large volume. It would be cheaper for us readers.) ( )
