The book suffers from the lack of background information and context regarding people and events during Oliver Cromwell time. It is perfect for somebody who is totally fluent in the history of that period and doesn't need any other references. Otherwise, the book covers life of Oliver Cromwell very well, providing some interesting perspectives - like Cromwell's firm belief in providence, that was guiding many of his decisions. "The first new biography of Cromwell in several years, this rounded account interweaves his political and military careers, and explores his passionate religiosity. Synthesizing much recent research on Cromwell's early life, Gentles presents to students a fresh view of him as a lay preacher, a soldier, and as lord protector"--Provided by publisher.
